The new SUV will be built alongside the Mustang Mach-E.

It's an exciting time for the Ford Explorer. Ford Performance has unleashed a one-off track version of the ST model, and the 2022 variant of the ST will be powering the rear wheels as standard. A new ST-Line trim has been added too, and the pricing is good. But what we're here to talk about today is the electric model that was confirmed in May of this year. We now have more information on the latest electric vehicle from Ford, thanks to a report from Automotive News. The outlet reports on when the Explorer EV will launch and where it will be built.

The good news is that we don't have long to wait, with the Explorer EV set to launch in 2023. Production will take place at Ford's Cuautitlan Assembly Plant in Mexico, where the Mustang Mach-E is also assembled. The regular combustion-powered Explorer variants will continue to be assembled in Chicago, however. But why is the Explorer getting first preference? Well, the Explorer is one of the Blue Oval's longest-running and most successful models, and since it is sold abroad too, it makes sense that Ford aims to present a face of electric expertise worldwide. As for performance figures, we can only guess at this point.

For reference, the existing hybrid version of the Explorer, which is powered by an electric motor and a 3.3-liter Duratec engine, produces 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid model uses a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 and an electric starter motor and generator to produce 450 hp and 608 lb-ft. Much like the electric F-150 Lightning became the F-150 range's most powerful model, we expect the electric Explorer to become the stand-out model on paper too. With the Explorer EV set to be built alongside the Mustang Mach-E, we're quietly optimistic that the new offering will be plenty of fun to drive.
